Hello Lovely Ladies!
Happy New Year to you all! What a great start to 2022 with such stunning weather in Taupo. I’m so glad I invested in a little portable fan before Christmas – it has been working overtime the past 2 weeks!
It’s been so lovely to have had some stunning sunsets looking out over the lake with hand stitching on my lap in the evenings since Christmas. I’m working on a couple of hand stitching samples in preparation for classes starting in February – so even though its relaxing, the pressure is still on to be 2 steps ahead of the class!

We still have the odd spot available in our Term classes listed below. If you have been looking to join a sewing group, there are one or 2 spaces left in these ones; I suggest you sign up quick as there is usually a bit of action once the newsletter goes out!

Here is a summary of our 2022 classes with places still available:

Patchwork & Quilting Class
Tuesday 10am -12.30pm – start date Tuesday 1st February

This is a class for those who love patchwork and like a challenge making new blocks, so there will be some teaching on technique. You are welcome to bring along your own patchwork project if you would like to join a class for both fellowship and needlecraft challenges. This class will cost $100 term.

Tuesday NIGHT CLASS – 7pm – 9pm
(starting Tuesday 1st February)

This class is suitable for those people who have busy day lives. You are welcome to come along and make a project of your own choice or pick one of our on-trend projects.
Class fees for the term are $80.00. Maximum class size is 8 people.

Wednesday Afternoon Class 1:30pm – 4pm
(starting Wednesday 2nd February)

You can bring your own sewing project, or choose from one of ours in this class. The fee will be $80.00 per term. We ask that the majority of your fabrics be purchased from The Eye Of A Needle.

BEGINNER’S SEWING CLASS
Thursday 10am – 12:30pm

This class is for a Beginning Sewist. We will teach you how to ‘drive’ your sewing machine and you can make simple projects to reinforce these skills.
The class will cost $100.00 per term. You will need to bring your own sewing machine and fabrics and patterns need to be purchased from The Eye Of A Needle.

KID’S HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Our next Kid’s Beginner’s Programme will be held on Tuesday 18th and Thursday 20th January 2022. Each student will receive their own brand new Bernette ‘Sew & Go 3’ sewing machine that they get to use in class and then take home. We will teach students the basics of how to use their new machine and then work with them to make their own tote bag.
Class Fee: $300 (includes a brand new sewing machine)
$150 deposit is required to secure a place in this class – maximum class size is 6 students – aged 10+.
Kids will need to bring their lunch. A sewing kit is also available for purchase for $40 and is highly recommended so all the kids are using the same tools in class.

Our Advanced Kid’s Programme will take place the following week on Tuesday 25th January from 10am – 4pm. This will be a ONE DAY ONLY class. The kids will learn how to make their own zippy bag – useful as a make up bag, pencil case, hair ties bag, or numerous other options bag!
The class size will be limited to 8. The girls must have completed a Beginner Class with us before they are eligible to enrol in an Advanced Class. Class fee will be $30 + fabric supplies.

JANUARY CALENDAR

Because we don’t have our regular classes until February, and also because not everyone gets to go on holiday in January, we will have some ‘Drop In’ days on Wednesdays & Fridays over the summer holidays. You can drop in at 10am, and you can stay and sew until 3pm if you want. Bring whatever UFO project you want to sew or finish and enjoy the company of others around the sewing table.

You MUST register for these days as there will be limited room around the table. Bring your lunch and $5 for each ‘Drop In’ day you attend. You can register for as many of these as you wish over January.

Dates for these ‘Drop In’ days will be:
Wednesday 12th January, Friday 14th January, Wednesday 19th January,
Friday 21st January, Wednesday 26th January

A DAY AT THE ZOO PLAYMAT

The construction of this interactive playmat will be a great way to master your applique and quilting skills!
We will be running this as a Block of the Month, starting in March and running for 10 months. We will put together the kit for you each month and you can either pick up in store, or we can post to you. If you have little ones in your life that need something super cute to lie or play on, this is a practical way to do both – and it is such fun to make!
The BOM will cost $40 month which includes the pattern and kit. Postage outside of Taupo will be extra.
The close off date to sign up for this project is 11th February

THE EYE OF A NEEDLE – WEEKEND RETREAT

Registrations are now being taken for our weekend retreat – dates are yet to be locked in but hopefully the weekend of 2/3 July will be the go.
We will make a weekend of it from Friday afternoon until after lunch Sunday. If you are at all interested, please let me know before the end of January. You have plenty of time so lock this in your diary and plan ahead! Meals will be a shared affair to keep costs down, and all you will need to pay for is your accommodation. We hope for some delicious gourmet recipes to be shared, as well as lots of creative juices to flow over this weekend.

BY ANNIE.COM – Switchback Convertible Backpack/Shoulder Bag

There has always got to be a new ByAnnie bag to make! The Switchback bag is a sturdy and versatile satchel, just the right size for running around town or taking on a trip. Adjustable straps make it easy to carry the bag in a variety of ways: over the shoulder, cross body, or as a backpack.

Switchback is designed to be made with a variety of fabrics, alternating them for a fun colour-block style. The colour-block design shows on both the front pocket and flap AND on the bag back.
A recessed zipper at the top keeps everything safe and secure and the flap may be secured to the front of the bag using attached hardware. Accessory straps on each side of the bag may be used to secure a ring of keys or a carabiner, or they may be used to help shape and close the bag. Exterior and interior pockets in a variety of styles carry and organize all of the day’s essentials. Switchback’s shape and design make it perfect for men or women of any age!
The bag measures 11″H x 11″W x 3½” D at top, 11″H x 11″W x 4½”D at bottom.

A workshop to make the Switchback bag on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th January – just before school and our regular classes start again. As is normal for these bags, cutting out and quilting your pieces before class will ensure that you will get your bag finished in class.
The cut off date for this class is17th January, so we can ensure we have the necessary hardware in for you in time for the class.

PLEASE NOTE: I am waiting for a big order to come from By Annie, which was due mid December. If for any reason the Soft & Stable batting is delayed in this shipment, we will need to postpone the class until later in the term. The joys of overseas freight and ongoing shipping dramas!

BERNINA/BERNETTE OVERLOCKER CLASS

We have sold a lot of overlockers over the past 12 months. I know when I purchased my first overlocker at least 30 years ago, I only ever really used it as a 4 thread serger to neaten my seams when dressmaking. Overlockers are designed to do SO MUCH MORE!

For any of you who have purchased a Bernina or bernette Overlocker from us at The Eye Of A Needle over the past 4 years, we will be holding a class to teach you all about the other functions your overlocker can be used for. In this class you will make samples using a variety of different fabrics, which you can label and add to your manual. Unfortunately this class is only available for owners of Bernina or bernette overlockers; your machine needs to be in good working order to attend this class.
We will cover the cost of fabric and labels; you come to the class with your threads and manual and we will teach you some new tricks. The class fee will be $40.
Dates for this class are Friday 25th February OR Saturday 26th Feb from 10am – 2pm

FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING WITH MARYANN

We have been busy organising and cutting chosen fabrics for those ladies doing the Foundation Paper Piecing ‘Coral Reef’ Quilt with Maryann Paterson, starting on February 11th.

This class has filled fast; there is ONE place left, so if you have been thinking about it, now is the time to commit. Your $280 deposit will cover the cost of papers needed for the class, and we will require this ASAP if you want to start the class in February with everyone else.
The full course fee for this class for 10 months will be $930. This includes Maryann’s tuition fee, the pattern, and hall hire each month. Once you have paid your deposit, the monthly class fee will be $65 each time you come to class. We will need to collect your payment monthly, even if you do not attend, as this covers the cost of having Maryann Paterson’s professional teaching. Your fabric is additional to this fee.
I will need your commitment this week if you want to make this your 2022 project. I know the cost has put a lot of people off – but remember, you get what you pay for. This is the ONLY class of this kind in NZ this year, and we are very privileged to have someone of Maryann’s calibre available in our neighborhood to tutor this class.

It’s always good to get the newsletter written as it helps me to get my head around the coming month, and its a great start to my week.
This year I am planning to have Mondays out of the shop, so that I can focus on loading fabric on to our website. It’s a big job, and one that I have been talking about for a while now. Next Monday will be my first training day, and we will be trialing loading MODA Grunge fabric on to the website first. Once the system is streamlined and flowing well, we will be able to add more fabric online as it comes in to the store.
I will be looking at hiring extra help on Mondays, with an opportunity to increase hours as we get busier with the website. If you think you might have some skills which I could use, please come and talk to me.
In the meantime, I need to get some samples sewn up in the quieter end of the afternoon.
