Hello Lovely Ladies
This week we received our long awaited delivery of batiks from Indonesia. There are a lovely mixture of colours, all quite plain at this stage, but I will order more once I know what the demand is like for this kind of fabric.
Because Taupo is quite a junction for shoppers, we need to stock a little bit of everything, and I find that a lot of our customers are looking for blenders to match up with their existing projects. That being said, our Fat Quarter packs rock out the door and we sell more of these than anything else in store, so we do try to keep the packs colourful and enticing!
With recent price hikes in freight and postage, the cost of all our new Fat Quarters will rise to $9.00 each; we will continue to offer our deal of Buy 6 FQ and get your 7th FQ free – so you will always get a lovely selection of Fat Quarters for $54! If we don’t have the fabric you are looking for precut in a FQ but have the fabric on the shelf, we are happy to cut a FQ for you for an extra 50 cents.
I drop parcels off at the Post Office frequently, and this week there are new post bags. The cheapest bag you can buy now is $4.50 and prices go up from there. The good news is that this now includes tracking, so we don’t have to pay extra for that. The sad news for rural customers is that any rural delivery address will now incur an extra $4.30 fee. This does make quite a difference to the cost of what we are posting and reluctantly we must pass this cost on to our customers.
We do so enjoy all the visitors we get to our store and it’s always so interesting to hear where you’ve come from and how you have found us! Thank God for Google Maps!
I have recently had talks with www.taupo.info so soon we will be even easier to find when you search online for us.
We were thrilled with the turnout to the BERNINA Road Show a couple of weeks ago and we were delighted that some of our customers were able to purchase lovely new sewing & quilting machines.
We had several orders for the new Air Overlockers which unfortunately won’t be here until October – but most delivery dates are improving slowly, so it’s still wise to get a machine on Back Order – especially if you would like it before Christmas!
Thank you all so much for your support during that very busy week – I had been at a most successful Rainbow Quilters’ Exhibition the weekend before, so enjoyed a day off the following weekend!
Our next focus will be the Night Shop with Taupo Quilt-makers on Thursday 29th July from 7-9pm in store. There will be 10% off all new fabric purchases that night, and 15% off all batting, so we plan to have good supplies of all your favourites in anticipation!
URBAN OWLS NEARING COMPLETION!
My Urban Owls Quilt has arrived back from being quilted by Dot from Stitchworks in Taumarunui this week. What a lot of work has gone in to the quilting on this! I have one more side of binding to sew up this weekend, and a little bit more embellishing to do before it goes up on the wall next week. With 3 more months to go before we finish this BOM, we are now considering our next project…this one has been lots of fun, with a few challenges in between. We quite like these challenges, and its been a great way to retire some of our older fabrics.
LAURA HEINE FABRIC COLLAGE CLASS
There has been a lot of interest in the Fiberworks – Laura Heine fabric collage class and we will close off numbers at the end of July to give us time to order the patterns. If you have been thinking about registering for the workshop I only have a couple of places left, so don’t leave it much longer! The full registration fee of $150 will secure your place in this class.
The Acacia Bay Hall is booked for Friday 20th and Saturday 21st August. The class will start at 9am and run until 4pm. Lunch, morning & afternoon teas will be provided both days and this is included in the class fee. The maximum class size is 20. You choose which pattern you would like to do in the class when you register so the choices will be between a rooster, flamingo, pink pumps, caravan, fish, sewing machine or several other samples that I can show you in store.
The only preparation you need before the class is to sort out your fabric – anything with a medium size flower is ideal. There isn’t a lot of sewing involved until the end of Day 2 but there will be lots of cutting and ironing during the first half of the class. We will bring extra supplies of fabric if you need to add to your stash, and the only other requirements will be lots of Steam-a-Seam and good sharp applique scissors – which we can sell to you on the day if you don’t have.
If you have special dietary requirements could you please let me know this in advance.
JEN KINGWELL’S GYPSY WIFE – SEW ALONG
Our Gypsy/Wanderer’s Wife Sew-Along is gaining momentum as new people join in. We have a few workbooks left so its not too late to participate as you can still get additional notes for this project even if you can’t attend the Sew Along in person. We meet on the 1st Friday of each month and stitch a feature block in class, and then give you instructions for what you will need to churn out at home before you come back the following month with a completed section of your quilt.
This concept is similar to a Block of the Month, but you choose your own fabrics (from The Eye Of A Needle), or you can use your own scraps or stash in colours of your choice.
The quilt is a sampler, with many one-off blocks, a smattering of square-in-square small blocks and vertical stripes. It finishes throw-sized at 59” x 68”. It’s been great to see so many variations of colours chosen – this quilt can be as formal or as scrappy as you like.
The Wanderer’s Wife workbook costs $36. Each time you come to the Sew Along we ask you to pay $5 to cover expenses.
KID’S HOLIDAY PROGRAMME – JULY HOLIDAYS.
This week we had 8 kids enrolled in our Kid’s Beginner Class. It was a pretty full on couple of days but the results speak for themselves, with some cute scrunchies being made on Day 1 and then a Tote Bag completed on Day 2.
Next week we will have another Kid’s Advanced Class on Tuesday 20th and Thursday 22nd July. There are 2 spots left! Anyone who has completed our Beginner’s class is eligible to enrol for this one. The girls will be making a Rainbow Bag using 2-1/2″ jelly roll strips so they can practice sewing straight seams. The strips will be sewn together, then quilted and made in to a bag.
The Advanced class will cost $50 for the 2 days + the fabric fee @ $35.
FOUNDATION PIECING CLASS WITH MARYANN PATERSON
Just a reminder about Maryann’s Foundation Piecing class on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October. The class will run from 9:30am – 4:30pm. Maryann is a Qualified Quiltworx Instructor and has taught a lot of foundation piecing classes at Grandmother’s Garden.
The cost of the class will be $60 per day. Maryann will teach techniques to make the Bear Claw Cushion as shown in the photo above. There are some other samples of Maryann’s work in store to inspire and I challenge you to sign up for this workshop to learn new techniques.
The weather forecast for the weekend isn’t looking great for the weekend, so tonight I’m taking my sewing machine home and I hope to churn out a couple of samples while Carol mans the shop tomorrow.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend doing what you enjoy the most too!
